State Finalist Advancement Packet:

Dear State Finalist Team and Coach,

Congratulations!

Advancing to the state tournament from your regional competition is an honor sought by over 750 teams throughout California!Your hard work and outstanding creativity have earned you the right to compete at the State Finals, which will be held at Heritage High School and Adams Middle School on March 25, 2017.  Your team now represents not only your school and your school district, but also all the teams from your region!

TEAM REGISTRATION: To register your team, your coach should go to www.odysseyofthemind.com.  Click on Member Area, Tournament Registration, and then follow the prompts to sign up for the State Tournament.  Please register within the next four days. If you cannot attend the tournament, please inform your regional director as soon as possible. If your coach has not been to the state tournament and would like to speak with a coach who has attended before, please contact your regional director.

Please note that you are required to provide a judge and a volunteer for this event.

Updated information will be posted on www.calomer.org under the “state” tab at the top of the page. Please check this often for updates and information.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE: The tournament schedule will be available one week prior to the tournament. Please check www.calomer.org as the schedule will be posted there. Any schedule conflicts should be noted when you register for the tournament. Please note that any schedule requests based on travel issues may not be able to be accommodated. We will accommodate scheduling needs for teams/coaches participating in multiple problems/divisions first.

DINING and ACTIVITIES:Our northern tournament director is working hard to have various food trucks available for dining options right on site. In addition, there will be fun activities available in the Heritage High School gym throughout the day, as well as pin trading.

GETTING TO THE TOURNAMENT SITE:  There will be a handout with general driving directions on the Calomer website. There will also be a campus map showing performance venues, parking, loading/unloading areas, and a general information handout about what is allowed and not allowed on campus.

LODGING OPTIONS: Please note that many local hotels are offering our organization rebates if you reserve a room stating you are from Odyssey. So, please use the phone numbers provided on our Calomer.org website under the state tab and book directly with the hotel. They are all offering us special rates as well.

TOURNAMENT SLIDE SHOW:  We are putting together a slide show we will be presenting at the state finals awards ceremony.  Please send one or two pictures of your team (preferably in costume) to Bob Lipman at blipman@comcast.net by March 18th. We will also be taking photos during the tournament.

STATE PIN TRADING: This has become a fun tradition at our state tournaments! Be sure to order your regional pin set so you are all ready to pin trade with other Calomers during the tournament! A handout for ordering your set of regional pins (and an OM lanyard) will be available on the Calomer website. You can also order directly online through the Calomer store.

SOUVENIRS: We will be selling lots of fun souvenirs at the state tournament, including Odyssey of the Mind items and California OotM world finals pins! We will also have California Odyssey of the Mind State Tournament t-shirts/hoodies for sale. Each shirt/hoodie will be custom made to your specifications right on site! Various designs will be available, and your team’s names can be put on the back!!

RAFFLE ITEMS: To support our state scholarship fund, we will be selling raffle tickets for two items. The first is a quilt made of cool Odyssey of the Mind t-shirts. The second item will be a pin towel of World Finals pins from last year’s OotM World Finals competition! Your state director traded for some awesome t-shirts and pins for these items, so please be sure to support this amazing scholarship! Stop by souvenir sales to view these items and purchase raffle tickets. Winners will be announced at awards.

AWARDS CEREMONY AT STATE: For the first time, due to the size of our tournament, we will need to hold two awards ceremonies at the state tournament. Please consult the schedule to determine when your team’s awards ceremony will be.

As you prepare for State Finals, we encourage you to practice your solution in many different places and before a large variety of people and keep practicing spontaneous problems!!Performing opportunities might include your school, PTA/PTO, your district school board, and local community organizations. During all the excitement, we want to encourage you to enjoy your achievement and keep focusing on teamwork and creativity.

When you are at the State Finals, be sure to appreciate and applaud the other teams from California. This is a great opportunity to make new friends with teams from across the state.

You are all winners! I can’t wait to see you all at Heritage High School and Adams Middle School on March 25th!!

Sincerely,

Lynn Larsen, California Odyssey of the Mind State Director

  1. To view the schedule on this website you go to the top of the homepage. The STATE tab is there. If your cursor is on top of the tab a menu will drop down. Move the cursor to the third menu choice, “2016 State Tournament Schedule” and click. This will show you the tournament schedule. You can also find information for the State Tournament on the homepage. Scroll down toward the bottom and you will see the Tournament Box located on the right-hand side. There is line toward the bottom of that box, “2016 State Tournament Schedule”, that can be clicked on and will show you the schedule also.

Sorry to hear that you missed the photo submit deadline. Unfortunately, we can not except any further photos at this time. Throughout the day photographers will be taking pictures of the state tournament that will be seen at the awards ceremony also.

    Safe travels to Riverside.

  2. Greg,

You can absolutely check in after your long-term problem. There is nothing in there that you will need for the long term problem presentation, but be sure to check in there following long term. As you mentioned you will need your spontaneous information and awards ceremony wristbands. Take care of that vehicle first and come by the HUB. No problem.

    Safe travels to Riverside.

  3. Hi, I am from the Redwood Region and I am trying to register for the State Tournament. When I follow all the prompts in the member area there is no drop down menu for the State Tournament. It only shows the regional tournament. Is it not available yet? Thanks.

    1. The update was completed and the registration indicates that you have been able to complete your advancement. If you have anything else please feel free to contact us or your regional directors.
